Review of Ryde Deanery Youth Lenten Program 2011 PDF Print E-mail

This year I participated in the Lenten Program run for the youth from the Ryde Deanery. It was a different experience to the Lenten programs that I have previously been involved with through St. Charles.

Each week, we had a different guest speaker who gave a reflection on the Gospel for the coming week. It was a great experience to get insight from other people, both religious and lay, which helped to provoke different meanings for us all personally.

LENTENGROUP2011Our Lenten group journey

Lent 2011 is one I will always remember.  Our Monday night group came together as individuals, some nervous about what and who we would find. The atmosphere created by our hostess was welcoming and provided a reflective space for our weekly gatherings.

The Heart to Heart program included a range of activities including prayer, readings reflection, discussions and a real world audio story. This weekly program provided structure which was gently challenging. It offered opportunities to discover the gospel stories, discuss our reactions and share a little of our own diverse experiences, cultural background and outlooks. New insights were gained into each other’s spirituality and the gospel reading and so enlivening our Sunday worship.

Review of one of the 2010 Lenten Groups PDF Print E-mail

lenten groupA number of Lenten groups met each week throughout Lent to take time to prepare for Easter and to understand more deeply our individual relationship with the risen Lord. The “faith & life” program that we followed presented many opportunities to consider the gospel afresh and to explore new ways of reflecting on the presence of God in our lives. Each meeting was a prayerful and giving experience.

Lent

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Matthew 18:20

During Lent parishioners are invited to gather with others to participate in the Lenten program. The program is built around the Sunday scriptures and provides an opportunity to refl ect on these scriptures and their relevance to our everyday lives.

In sitting with the scriptures and praying together we open ourselves to learning more about Christ, and to developing our relationship with Christ and others. Gathering in God’s name, reflecting on the scripture and sharing something of one’s life journey, are all powerful elements of the program which strives to help the Parish deepen the bonds of community.

Various groups of 7 or 8 people generally meet either during the daytime or evening. In addition to the general groups there are those specifically established to cater for youth, young adults, different cultures, school parents, the recently married, men and seniors.

Over the past couple of years St Charles Borromeo has been blessed with some 30 groups which gather during Lent. The Lenten program is considered a foundational exercise in faith formation both for individual parishioners and for the St Charles community as a whole.
