As part of the St. Charles Outreach Programme, a small team of committed and inspired parishioners are actively involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s Night Patrol Service.
The Society’s Night Patrol van feeds the homeless of Sydney every night, making stops at places like Central Station, Martin Place and Tom Uren Square. Comprised of members from across the Parish Community, the Night Patrol Group takes on the responsibility of running the service one Sunday night each month. This involves purchasing food (generally boxes of bread, milk for tea and coffee, and other basics), making sandwiches before the designated evening Mass and then afterwards, travelling to Lewisham to load up the van.
Until late in the evening, members of the patrol drive around providing food, hot drinks, care and conversation to the needy. The Night Patrol can be a very challenging ministry but is one which is also richly rewarding.
