CARPE DIEM: THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP
In Dead Poet’s Society, John Keating (played by Robin Williams) is teaching his first English class at his old school. Passionate about his subject, he wants to fire the imagination of his students. He wants them not to learn about poetry but to be engaged and moved by it. He calls them from their classroom, symbol of uninspiring safety, to a foyer with historical pictures of past students. He asks them to focus on the young faces as he says: They're not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts. Full of hormones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you, their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because, you see gentlemen, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in.
Listen, you hear it? - - Carpe - - hear it? - - Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.
Faith – the call to follow Jesus as his disciple – is a call to carpe diem.

When World Youth Day (WYD) was held in Sydney in 2008, St Charles Borromeo hosted pilgrims from the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin in Ireland.
What a surprise then, when we were lining up to enter the site for catechesis and Mass, whilst in Madrid Spain for WYD, when one of our pilgrims, Elyse Dean, began talking to an Irish person on the line. This young person came from the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

On Wednesday 21st September 2011, Young at Heart had a coach trip to the Radio Museum at Kurrajong.
It was a most interesting glimpse into the history of radio communications from the early 19th Century. Ian O’Toole, the owner of the Museum, (which receives no Government funding) is a very knowledgeable chap, having been intrigued with Radio since a ten year old, with his first crystal set.

As part of the ongoing formation and connection with the young people in the Sydney Diocese, a post WYD gathering was held on Saturday 10th September 2011.
This event was organised by the Ryde Deanery in conjunction with Catholic Youth Services (CYS) and was hosted by St Charles Borromeo Parish.
The event was an afternoon of various workshops on topics such as discernment, social justice and theology of the body, followed by a BBQ. In the evening there was prayer and adoration with some fantastic music supplied by Gary Pinto and the Revelations along with the opportunity to participate in the sacrament of reconciliation.

Posting Parish Bulletin on Website |
|

It is common practice for parishes to post the Sunday Parish Bulletin directly to the Parish website. This offers more exposure for the Bulletin. I have resisted this practice until now because of privacy issues.
Parishioners and others who submit notices may be willing to list a phone number or email address on the Parish Bulletin but not on the Parish Website.
